About the Cocker Spaniel
An English breed originally developed for hunting birds, especially the woodcock, from which part of its name derives. Its skill at flushing, tracking, and retrieving small birds in dense terrain made it indispensable to British hunters throughout the 19th century.
Today it's one of the most popular family dogs in the world, valued for its sweet, cheerful, and highly sociable temperament with both people and other animals. It's sensitive to its owner's tone of voice and responds very well to positive-reinforcement training, generally being easy to raise.
The long, drooping ears, one of the breed's most recognizable traits, trap moisture and reduce airflow to the ear canal, requiring regular cleaning to prevent recurring infections. Its silky, wavy coat also needs frequent brushing and periodic trimming to avoid matting, especially around the ears, paws, and belly.
Health and predispositions
Predisposition to chronic ear infections due to its long, drooping ears, eye problems such as glaucoma and cataracts, and various skin conditions. Always consult a veterinarian for the preventive exams appropriate for this breed.
