About the Rottweiler
Descended from cattle-driving dogs used by Roman legionaries, who left some behind as they passed through the German town of Rottweil. There, the breed was refined to drive cattle to market and pull butchers' carts tied around its neck, earning it the nickname "Rottweiler Metzgerhund," or "butcher's dog."
It's an extremely confident, calm, and territorial dog, with a strong instinct to protect family and property. Contrary to the aggressive stereotype it often carries, when well socialized and trained from puppyhood it is gentle, patient, and affectionate at home, and today it is widely used as a guard, police, and family dog.
Given its large size and protective temperament, it requires an experienced owner willing to invest in early socialization and consistent positive-reinforcement training. It's a breed that responds very well to calm, firm leadership, but can become dominant or distrustful without proper boundaries.
Health and predispositions
High predisposition to hip and elbow dysplasia, osteosarcoma (bone cancer), and gastric dilatation-volvulus, a serious and common veterinary emergency in deep-chested breeds. Always consult a veterinarian for the preventive exams appropriate for this breed.
