About the Akita
A Japanese breed originating in Akita Prefecture, historically used by nobles to hunt bears, boars, and deer, and later enshrined as a national symbol of loyalty and protection — the world-famous story of Hachikō, the Akita who waited for his deceased owner at Shibuya train station for nearly ten years, perfectly illustrates this trait.
It's deeply loyal to its immediate family, but naturally reserved and wary of strangers, which makes it an excellent guard dog even without specific training for the job. It tends to be dominant and can show aggression toward other dogs, particularly of the same sex, requiring careful socialization from puppyhood.
It's a strong-willed breed that benefits from an experienced owner with clear, consistent boundaries. Despite being reserved, at home it tends to be calm, clean (there are reports of Akitas grooming themselves cat-like), and deeply affectionate with those it trusts.
Health and predispositions
Predisposition to hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and autoimmune skin diseases such as pemphigus; elevated risk of gastric dilatation-volvulus due to its large size and deep chest. Always consult a veterinarian for the preventive exams appropriate for this breed.
