About the Border Collie
Developed along the border between England and Scotland (hence the name) for herding sheep, the Border Collie is widely regarded by canine psychologist Stanley Coren as the most intelligent dog breed in the world, able to learn new commands in fewer than five repetitions.
It works by guiding the flock with the so-called "eye" — a silent, intimidating stare inherited from its predatory ancestors. That same work intensity carries over into home life: the Border Collie needs tasks, training, and constant mental challenges, not just physical exercise.
It's one of the most demanding breeds to keep as a pet: without enough stimulation, it develops compulsive behaviors like chasing shadows or reflections, and may try to "herd" children and other household pets by nipping at their heels. It's not recommended for sedentary owners or those who spend long periods away from home, but it's extraordinary for active families and dog sport enthusiasts like agility.
Health and predispositions
Predisposition to Collie eye anomaly (CEA), progressive retinal atrophy, and epilepsy; when it doesn't get enough mental stimulation, it can develop obsessive-compulsive behaviors. Always consult a veterinarian for the preventive exams appropriate for this breed.
