About the Golden Retriever

Developed in Scotland during the second half of the 19th century by Lord Tweedmouth, who crossed a yellow retriever with the now-extinct Tweed Water Spaniel to produce a hunting dog capable of retrieving birds from water and rough terrain. The result was a breed with a golden coat, a balanced temperament, and a keen nose.

The Golden is known for an almost proverbial gentleness: it rarely barks without reason, is extremely tolerant, and thrives on human company, traits that make it one of the most widely used therapy and guide dog breeds in the world. It is also an excellent swimmer and retriever, keeping a strong instinct to "carry things in its mouth" even in a domestic setting.

The dense, feathered double coat needs frequent brushing (ideally several times a week) to prevent matting and reduce shedding. It needs consistent daily exercise and mental stimulation, making it an excellent choice for families with children, though it requires proactive veterinary care given the breed's high cancer rate.

Health and predispositions

Elevated predisposition to several cancers (hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma), hip/elbow dysplasia, and heart conditions such as subaortic stenosis. Always consult a veterinarian for the preventive exams appropriate for this breed.
