About the Munchkin
A relatively recent breed, formally recognized by cat associations only in the 1990s in the United States, though reports of short-legged cats appear sporadically in the literature since the early 20th century. It's defined by a natural, spontaneous genetic mutation that shortens the leg bones without affecting the rest of the body.
Despite its short legs, the Munchkin is surprisingly agile, able to run, jump, and play in ways very similar to a cat with normal-length legs, just with somewhat lower jumps. It's extroverted, playful, and curious, adapting well to different types of homes.
It's a controversial breed among some international cat associations, which raise welfare concerns related to the bone mutation that shortens its legs. That's why it's especially important to adopt from responsible breeders who screen their breeding cats' spines for health and avoid pairing two Munchkins together (the gene is generally lethal in double dose).
Health and predispositions
Predisposition to lordosis (abnormal spinal curvature) and early osteoarthritis, associated with the genetic mutation responsible for its short legs — the same category of mutation (skeletal dysplasia) that produces short legs in some dog breeds. Always consult a veterinarian for the preventive exams appropriate for this breed.
