About the Shih Tzu
An ancient breed that originated in the Tibetan region and was refined at the Chinese imperial court, where it was bred exclusively as a lapdog for royalty — the name literally means "lion dog," a reference to its build and the mane of hair around its head. For centuries, breeding was restricted to the Chinese royal family.
It has a docile, cheerful, and adaptable temperament, making it one of the most popular companion breeds in apartments around the world. It is affectionate with family but also carries a degree of independence that sets it apart from breeds that crave constant attention.
Its long, silky coat, which can reach the floor, requires daily brushing to prevent matting, or a short "puppy cut" every 6–8 weeks for owners who prefer lower maintenance. It's an excellent choice for first-time owners, seniors, or apartment dwellers, but needs extra care in the heat due to its short muzzle.
Health and predispositions
Mild brachycephalic airway syndrome, eye problems such as corneal ulcers from prominent eyes, and dental issues stemming from the short muzzle. Always consult a veterinarian for the preventive exams appropriate for this breed.
