About the Bengal
A relatively recent breed, developed starting in the 1980s by crossing the Asian leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis), a small wild felid, with domestic cats, aiming to reproduce the spotted, rosetted coat typical of wild cats in a domestic setting while keeping a temperament suited to living with people.
It's one of the most athletic and energetic cat breeds, with a strong hunting and climbing instinct, and an unusual trait for a cat: it tends to enjoy water, playing with faucets, water bowls, and even climbing into bathtubs.
It requires a lot of environmental enrichment — tall scratching posts, interactive toys, and frequent play sessions — to avoid developing destructive behavior out of boredom. It's not the best choice for owners looking for a sedentary, homebody cat, and does best in active households with room to explore and climb.
Health and predispositions
Predisposition to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and a hereditary condition called pyruvate kinase deficiency, which causes anemia; needs plenty of environmental enrichment to channel its energy. Always consult a veterinarian for the preventive exams appropriate for this breed.
