About the Boxer
A German breed developed in the late 19th century from the Bullenbeisser, an old big-game hunting dog used to hold boars and other large animals at bay until the hunter arrived. As traditional hunting declined, the breed was redirected toward guard work, draft work, and, later, companionship.
It's famous for keeping a puppy-like energy and playfulness well into adulthood, earning it the affectionate nickname "the Peter Pan of dog breeds." It combines that playful spirit with remarkable patience around children, and has historically been considered one of the best breeds for families with young kids.
It needs plenty of daily exercise to burn off its high energy, but struggles with heat and intense exertion due to its moderately flattened muzzle. It's also a natural, excellent watchdog — alert and protective, but rarely aggressive without cause when well socialized.
Health and predispositions
Elevated predisposition to dilated cardiomyopathy (known as "Boxer cardiomyopathy"), mast cell tumors, and mild brachycephalic syndrome. Always consult a veterinarian for the preventive exams appropriate for this breed.
