About the British Shorthair
One of the oldest cat breeds in Britain, descended from domestic cats brought over by the Romans nearly two thousand years ago, later refined by Victorian breeders in the late 19th century to establish the sturdy build and round face we recognize today.
Its compact, "cobby" body, round face, and characteristic grin served as the inspiration for the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland. Its dense, short, plush-textured coat is another hallmark of the breed.
It has a calm, independent, and undemonstrative temperament — not a typical lap cat, but it shows affection in its own way, preferring quiet company to rowdy play. It's an excellent choice for owners who work outside the home, since it adapts well to being alone for stretches, but needs weight management given its tendency toward a sedentary lifestyle.
Health and predispositions
Predisposition to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and polycystic kidney disease; tends toward obesity due to the breed's naturally low activity level. Always consult a veterinarian for the preventive exams appropriate for this breed.
