About the Ragdoll

An American breed developed in California during the 1960s by breeder Ann Baker, from crossing semi-long-haired cats with a particularly docile temperament. Its name refers to the breed's characteristic behavior of going completely limp, like a ragdoll, when picked up.

It's considered one of the most docile and handling-tolerant cat breeds around, making it a popular choice for families with children, since it typically tolerates enthusiastic petting and play without reacting with scratches or fleeing.

Despite its large size — adult males can top 15 lbs — and its semi-long, silky coat, it mats less than other long-haired breeds, making weekly brushing manageable. It's extremely sociable and attached to its family, following owners around the house and regularly seeking out company.

Health and predispositions

Predisposition to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and urinary stone formation; its large size calls for attentive weight control. Always consult a veterinarian for the preventive exams appropriate for this breed.
