About the Persian
One of the oldest documented cat breeds, originating in the region of Persia (present-day Iran) and brought to Europe by traders in the 17th century, where it quickly became a status symbol among the aristocracy for its long, luxurious coat and placid temperament.
It's extremely calm, sweet, and homebody, preferring quiet settings and predictable routines over rowdy play, which makes it ideal for apartments and for owners looking for a serene companion. It's reserved with strangers but deeply affectionate with its family.
The long, extremely dense coat requires daily brushing to prevent matting and hairballs. Modern lines with flatter faces ("peke-face") carry respiratory risks and need extra attention to signs of breathing difficulty, along with regular eye cleaning to prevent tear staining.
Health and predispositions
Predisposition to polycystic kidney disease (PKD), respiratory problems linked to its flattened face (brachycephaly), and epiphora (excessive tear production). Always consult a veterinarian for the preventive exams appropriate for this breed.
