About the Siamese
Originating in the ancient kingdom of Siam (present-day Thailand), where it was considered sacred and kept exclusively by royal families and Buddhist monks, who believed the cat carried its owner's soul after death. It reached the West in the late 19th century and caused a sensation at cat shows with its exotic look.
It's one of the most vocal and talkative cats around, "chatting" with its owner through a wide range of meows and vocalizations, almost as if holding up its end of a conversation. It forms intense bonds with its owners and can develop separation anxiety when left alone for long periods.
The distinctive "colorpoint" coat — a light body with darker extremities (ears, muzzle, paws, and tail) — results from a temperature-sensitive genetic mutation: the cooler areas of the body develop darker pigmentation. It's extremely intelligent and active, needing consistent stimulation and interaction to avoid boredom.
Health and predispositions
Predisposition to respiratory problems, hereditary strabismus and nystagmus (involuntary eye movements), hepatic amyloidosis, and certain cancers such as mast cell tumors. Always consult a veterinarian for the preventive exams appropriate for this breed.
