About the Sphynx
A Canadian breed developed from a natural, spontaneous genetic mutation observed in a litter in Ontario in 1966, which resulted in an almost complete lack of fur. Breeders carefully selected for this trait over the following decades until the breed was stabilized.
Despite its "naked" appearance, the Sphynx's skin isn't entirely smooth — it usually has a light fuzz and naturally produces oil, requiring weekly baths to remove buildup and prevent it from accumulating in skin folds. Contrary to popular belief, it isn't a hypoallergenic breed, since human cat allergies are caused by the Fel d1 protein found in saliva, not fur itself.
It's extremely sociable, extroverted, and craves physical contact and attention, actively seeking laps and closeness with its owners — partly because its lack of fur makes it harder to regulate its own body temperature, and human warmth helps compensate. It's curious and loves being involved in everything happening around the house.
Health and predispositions
Predisposition to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, sensitive skin that needs sun protection and regular baths, and greater body heat loss from lacking a coat, making it sensitive to cold. Always consult a veterinarian for the preventive exams appropriate for this breed.
